Known primarily as a watercolorist by some historians, little is known about James Alden except that allegedly he was a watercolorist who spent most of his life as an explorer. However, Edan Hughes in his book, "Artists in California, 1786-1940" writes that references to him "as a watercolorist are erroneous." He became an admiral and died at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco in 1877 and "was never an artist as verified by his family".
