This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following biographical data is from Rich Herzig, whose sources include Who's Who in American Art, 1947 and 1959, and Kimball's Auction and Estate Service, who handle the estate of the artist.

James Apostle was a rising star in the art world in the late 1940’s . In fact in 1949 he was invited by Life magazine editors to send them pictures of his work for inclusion in their story on emerging American artists. He was too broke financially to do so.

Unfortunately, Mr. Apostle’s mother inlaw became ill shortly thereafter, and he was forced to work as a commercial lithographer to support his wife and mother and law.  He continued to paint however, and his haunting and unusual landscapes took on a unique style that belies a great but wholly isolated talent.  He rarely offered his paintings for sale and then only to close friends and family.
