Born in Crownpoint, New Mexico, Jim Abeita started drawing on grocery sacks at the age of 3. He attended high school in Gallup, New Mexico and Salt Lake City. Later he attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago, doing a two year course in nine months.
He lived in Chicago for several years, and in the late 1970s went back to the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. There, encouraged by his wife, he began selling his paintings and won awards in major art shows.
