Biography from Chemers Gallery:
| John Arbuckle was born in New York City in 1953. He received his
BFA in painting and printmaking from the Pratt Institute, New York, in
1976. Since then, he has sold his work widely and exhibited in
solo and group exhibitions both in New York City, San Francisco (where
he resides), and elsewhere. His work won the Gold and Silver Art
of California Discovery Awards, and 1994 and 1996 Exhibition Awards
from the LANA International Paper Art Competition. Most presently
he has won a Bronze Award for printmaking from KTEH-TV, San Jose, 1996.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Purity, balance and luminosity are the qualities I strive for in my
art. I am searching for the silent moment---the zen-like posture --
that surrounds objects when they are seen singularly and closely.
My work continues the tradition begun by the great 17th century
painters, Zubaran and Melendez, and carried on by Raphaelle Peale and
Winslow Homer. I want to observe the fruit or flowers so closely that,
individually, each is as recognizable as a human face.
