A modernist painter of surreal, symbolic or imaginative landscapes and figures, John Armstrong was also a book illustrator, and mural painter whose paintings are in the collections in England of the Brighton Museum, Courtauld Institute of Art, Tate Gallery and Manchester City Art Gallery. He studied at St. John's College, Oxford before World War I and returned there after the war for a short period. In 1928, he had his first one-man exhibition, which was held at Leicester Galleries.< (showing 500 of 811 characters). |
