John Martin Alfsen was born in Alpena, Michigan. His family moved to Toronto, Canada when he was eleven. He was primarily a figurative artist whose mediums were oils, chalk and pastels ( he also studied sculpture). The subjects of his paintings and drawings were portraits, landscapes, nudes and circus life. Some of the artists he admired were Renoir, Michelangelo, Courbet, Poussin, Corot and Cezanne, whose influence is evident in many of his oil portraits.
