| Comment from Elizabeth Dods:
"The son of Moroccan immigrants to Canada, Joseph Amar was teaching at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto in the 1980's when I met him. I studied painting briefly with him, and was fortunate to visit him, his wife Dale and daughter Hannah in his New York home and Studio in his first year there. He was an enabling and inspiring teacher whom I will never forget. I am fortunate to have a large mixed-media work called 'Metropolis' (featured in a Canadian Art Magazine) which was one of his first impressions of his adopted city New York, as well as a couple of pastel drawings from his 'New York Landlord' series." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment from Marc Schneider:
'Joseph Amar died January 2001.
Joe had been in a serious car crash back in September 1991. His wife was killed, and his daughter was seriously injured, but has since recovered. Joe was not as lucky as either his wife or daughter. Joe was in a chronic care facility for 10 years with an irreversible closed head injury. He finally succumbed this January to complications.
Joe had spent 20 years pursuing his art against all the odds, and to the dismay of some family members. He had finally "made it" in the late 1980's and early 1990's when his art found a place in the Guggenheim, and other US and European museums. A well-known European collector had made a deal with Joe that truly elevated Joe out of the poverty he had resigned himself to while pursuing his dream. It was about then that a drunk driver wiped out Joe's ongoing efforts.
His art is held by several notables such as Bianca Jagger, Elton John, and Yoko Ono. It was exciting when I saw Joe's art in a magazine article displaying one of Elton John's homes."
