| From Illinois, Margaret Ashmead was a painter, known primarily for still-life subjects. She settled in Los Angeles in 1856 and remained there until her death in 1918. She was a member of the Society of Fine Arts of Southern California and exhibited at the Columbian World's Fair in Chicago, 1893.
