| | Born in Elkader, IA on April 1, 1890. Martha Oathout earned a B.A. degree at Carleton College in 1911 and then studied at the AIC under Lorado Taft, Charles Mulligan, and George E. Ganiere. For several years she taught sculpture in Denver, CO at Art Guild Academy and Denver Jr. High School. She moved from Denver to Los Angeles in the 1920s with her husband James A. Ayres and was active through the early 1960s. Mrs. Ayres died in Los Angeles on Feb. 24, 1975. Member: LA AA; Fellow, Royal Society of Artists (London). Exh: ASL of Chicago, 1914 (1st prize); LA County Fair, 1915, 1924; South Dakota State Fair, 1916 (1st prize); Wyoming State Fair, 1918 (1st prize); Calif. Art Club, 1927.
