Biography from AskART:
Born in Deer Lodge, MT on June 25, 1880. From a wealthy family, Abascal’s family had amassed a fortune in copper mining. Upon her father’s death in 1888, she and her mother moved to Los Angeles. By 1900 she was among the City’s elite and cosmopolitan from her many extended trips to Paris to study art. On the return from one of these trips she studied in NYC briefly. By 1906 she had established a studio in Los Angeles and was active in the local art scene. A brilliant colorist, her avant-garde works of the modern French school received high praise from the local press. Her vacation home in Laguna Beach became her permanent residence in 1940. A spinster, she died there on Feb. 22, 1968. Exh: Ruskin Art Club (LA), 1904; Painters & Sculptors of LA, 1930, 1933; Laguna Beach Art Association, 1930s.
