This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A plein-air impressionist painter, Meredith Abbott is from California, where she grew up in an idyllic rural setting above Carpinteria, just south of Santa Barbara. Her parents emphasized a deep appreciation and reverence for the land, and she and her three siblings were allowed to spend much time exploring on foot and horseback.

Abbott attended Scripps College in Claremont and majored in art. She returned home and studied with Douglass Parshall (1899-1990), Richard Meryman (1891-1963), and Clarence Hinkle (1880-1960). From these men with whom she occasionally went on plein-air painting trips, she gained a solid background in realist and impressionist painting.

After several years, she went to Los Angeles where she attended the Art Center School, and then she studied in New York at the Art Students League, while working as an illustrator. After Richard Meryman died, she completed some of his portraits, having visited him in Ireland.

In 1970, Abbott returned to California, and settled first in San Francisco. She married Duncan Abbott, a banker, and in 1974, the couple moved to the Rincon area of southern California where they took over the running of the avocado and lemon ranch that had been in Abbott's family.

This setting with their restored Victorian home has become an inspiring place for Abbott's painting. She has a studio designed and built by her husband, and with high windows and natural light, it is modeled after the studio of Clarence Hinkle. However, she does not confine her subjects to that area as she travels throughout California, the Northwest, and on the East Coast including New Hampshire. She also paints studio still lifes.

She is also a conservation activist, and Abbott and her daughter, Whitney Brooks Abbott, participate in plein-air exhibitions.

Biography from City of Ventura Municipal Art Collection:
Meredith Brooks Abbott continues the American Impressionist legacy through her luminous paintings of California landscapes and still life compositions. Abbott studied under several recognized American Impressionist painters - Douglass Parshall, Richard Meryman and Clarence Hinkle.

Abbott’s family-owned, fifty-acre ranch in Carpinteria is the landscape found in her plein air paintings. With an affinity for nature, Abbott is active in the preservation of threatened environments in California. Abbot is a member of the Open Airing Klub (OAK), a group of painters whose subjects are endangered areas threatened by development.

Meredith is also a member of numerous arts associations including the Santa Barbara Arts Council, Plein Air Painters of America, and the California Art Club.
