Roger J. Armstrong was born in Los Angeles, California on October 12, 1917. He studied at Pasadena City College and Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. He spent considerable time studying with well known artists Phil Dike, Dan Lutz, Richard Haines, and Rex Brandt in the 1940's. Armstrong was a successful cartoonist who also painted California watercolor landscapes in what is referred to as the "California Style".

Armstrong spent time as a cartoonist with Disney, Warner Bros., Hanna Barbera and the Walter Lantz Studios. He worked on "The Flintstones", "Little Lulu", and "Bugs Bunny" cartoon. He was an award winning cartoonist while working for these firms in the 1950's. From 1963-65 he served as the Director of the Laguna Beach Museum of Art.

Later in his career, Armstrong taught art at Orange Coast College, the Art Institute of Southern California, and the Laguna Beach School of Art. Armstrong exhibited at the Laguna Festival of the Arts, the National Watercolor Society Annuals, The National Orange Show, Irvine Fine Arts Center, and the Laguna Museum of Art.
Armstrong's works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Cartoon Art in Port Chester, New York, Ohio State University, the Orange County Museum, and the Smithsonian Institute.

Roger Armstrong was a Signature Member and Past President of the National Watercolor Society (NWS), member of the California Watercolor Society, the National Cartoonist's Society, the Artists Equity, Niguel Art Association, San Luis Obispo Art Association, Los Angeles Art Association, and Member, and Past President, of the Laguna Beach Art Association.

Born in Los Angeles, CA on Oct. 12, 1917, Roger Joseph Armstrong studied at Pasadena City College (1934-38), and Chouinard Art Institute under Phil Dike, Dan Lutz, Richard Haines, and Rex Brandt.

During the 1940s he did illustrations and comic books for Western Publishing Company and was assistant animator for Walter Lantz Studio.  During the 1950s he was a nationally syndicated cartoonist (“Ella Cinders” and “Napoleon”); during 1963-65 he was director of the Laguna Beach Museum, and was staff artist at Disney Studios from 1977 until 1989.

His teaching experience includes the Laguna Beach School of Art (1967-86) and colleges throughout southern California. 

He died at his home in Dana Point, California on June 7, 2007.

National Water Color Society (pres. 1984-85); Nat’l Cartoonists Society.
