This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A genre, landscape and portrait painter, Sophie Anderson was born in Paris, France and studied briefly there in 1843 with Alexandre Joseph Steuben. She may also have studied with her father, Charles A.C. Gengembre, a well-known French architect

She came to America with her parents in 1849. The family first settled in Cincinnati where she painted portraits of prominent persons and did illustrations for Henry Howe's book "Historical Collections of the Great West" (1851). Several years later, the family moved to Manchester, Pennsylvania, and Sophie married the artist, Walter Anderson, with whom she had collaborated in Cincinnati on a portfolio of portraits of US Protestant Episcopal Bishops.

The couple settled in Europe, living mainly in England, with some time spent on the Isle of Capri, but she continued to be active in the United States with exhibitions in 1860 and 1883 at the National Academy of Design, 1858 at the Pennsylvania Academy, 1858 at the Boston Athenaeum Gallery, and 1875 and 1876 at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore.

Sophie gained great fame in Europe with her sentimental genre paintings, and she also worked for Louis Prang Company who did chromolithographs of her works including "Prattling Primrose" and "Dotty Dimple."
