He was born on October 5, 1917, on Central Park West in New York City. At the age of eight he began to sketch seriously. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and later at the Art Students League of New York. He met Doris Bass at the Art Students League and she later became his wife for 55 years. The couple bought the main Julian Alden Weir farmhouse after the death of Mahonri Mackintosh Young, the sculptor who was the son-in-law of American Impressionist Julian Alden Weir.
