| Born to Chinese parents in Bangkok, Thailand, Sunny Apinchapong-Yang is
a painter in a style that combines Expressionism and
Impressionism. In reverence for his family origins, the artist who began
his career with the name Sunny Apinchapong added Yang as his last name.
He settled in America in 1970, and took his first formal art education
in Los Angeles at the Art Center College and California State
University. He earned a Bachelor's Degree and Master of Fine Arts.
His mentor was Sergei Bongart with whom he studied
in 1977 on a scholarship at the Sergei Bongart School of Art in Los
Angeles. He became his studio assistant at the school and in
Idaho at workshops. Later Yang taught workshops and classes in
schools including the Brandes Art Institute in Reseda, California.
In
1984, he had a one-man show at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle and had a
master exhibition that same year at Cal State University.
From
1987 through 1989, he worked in Dublin, Ireland on three feature films
for Sullivan Bluth Studios and also had exhibitions of his work in that
city including an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts.
Apinchapong-Yang is a signature member of the California Art Club, and
serves on its Board of Directors. He has also been an artist for
Walt Disney and for Dreamworks Animation.
