Carlson's specialty is Post-World War II California artists, and he is preparing a catalogue for a 2004 traveling exhibition of these artists to several California museums. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Born in New York City, Thomas Akawie studied at Los Angeles City College from 1953 to 1956. In 1959, he earned a BA in Art History from the University of California at Berkeley. He has taught art at various universities in California and worked in abstractions of rigidly symmetric forms. "Initially inspired by floor plans of historic European cathedrals, (they) were set in etherealized fields that implied vast spaces; meticulously airbrushed, they suggested both precision machine parts and primitively stylized figures, and were frequently exhibited with the work of the Visionaries." He later turned to landscapes- Magic Realist deserts and skies, also airbrushed. In the 1970s he emphasized more conventional Photo Realist subjects.
