| Virginia Elizabeth Hugh Arthur, a painter, was born in Illinois on May 18, 1865. At an early age she moved to San Diego, California. In 1912 Arthur was a pupil of Lorenzo P. Latimer while living in Santa Cruz, California on the Monterey Peninsula. In 1919 she became the cofounder of the Santa Cruz Art League. She later returned to San Diego where she remained until her death on April 8, 1923. In addition to the Santa Cruz Art League, she was a member of the San Diego Art Guild.
