This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in New York City, he studied at Holy Cross College and then recieved an MFA from the University of Iowa. From 1968 to 1971, he was an art instructor at the School of Visual Arts in New York, from 1971 to 1978, and at the California Art Institute. He has also taught briefly at other institutions and is known for his video and conceptual art. He has been a resident of Brooklyn, New York.

After receiving an MFA from the University of Iowa, Acconci began producing his uncompromising, subversive visual work in 1969, using both video and performance. Throughout the 1970s, he focused primarily on sound pieces and installation, turning to sculptural installation in the 1980s. A retrospective exhibit and catalog was produced by the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art in 1980.
