Wendell Phillips Austin was born in New Haven, Connecticut in August
21, 1896 and was educated in the local school system. He was a
1917 honors graduate from Yale University, where he majored in
painting. Just before receiving the Prix-de-Rome prize at Yale,
his ROTC unit was called up for service in World War I. Austin
was injured in a mustard gas attack in France and returned home after
two years of service.
