Biography from The National Art Museum of Sport, Inc.:
Countess de Lesseps was the granddaughter of Count Ferdinand de Lesseps, the Frenchman who built the Suez Canal and initiated the French effort to build the Panama Canal that was finished by the United States. Countess de Lesseps attended the 1999 ceremonies when the U.S. turned the canal over to Panama.

Born in Paris, she was the daughter of the much decorated French aviator and war hero, Jacques de Lesseps. She kept the de Lesseps name after becoming a United States citizen and several marriages. Her Connecticut neighbor, German G. Glidden, founder of the National Art Museum of Sport, painted her portrait with a red fan which hangs in his former studio in Norwalk, Conn. She served as a NAMOS trustee.

As a sculptor and painter, de Lesseps has work in the White House, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., and in embassies, corporations, private collections and museums around the world. She also was known for her philanthropic work.
