This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A Mexican-American magazine and newspaper illustrator, especially known for caricatures, George Dezayas worked for Colliers, Harper's Bazaar and the New York Herald Tribune.   He was the son of Rafael de Zayas Enriquez (1848-1932), a lawyer and poet laureat of Mexico, who got crosswise philosophically with the Mexican government and its dictator, Porfirio Diaz.  The Dezayas family was forced to flee, and they emigrated to New York City.

There, George's brother, Marius de Zayas (1880-1961), became a well-known caricature artist and art dealer.  At the age of 16, George went to Paris to study art, and in 1919, had eleven of his caricatures published in Paris with the writings of food critic Maurice Edmond Sailland (1872-1956).  While living in Paris Dezayas photographed Marcel Duchamp with his head shaved into the shape of a comet, an image that has often been reproduced in the literature on this artist.

In 1926, Dezayas returned to the United States in 1926 and began his magazine illustration career as a free lancer.  In 1933, he designed the Huey Long Medal, and joining the Artists Guild in 1938, he served briefly as president.

He ended his career as a commercial photographer, working for many years for the International Division of RCA.
