| John Hovey left Salem, MA in 1849, Hovey arrived in San Francisco with the Gold Rush and spent two years mining in the Mother Lode area. His journal, complete with rough drawings and watercolors, including one of Sutter's Fort, is held in the Huntington Library in San Marino, CA.
