Biography from Kahn-Dumousset:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

James Rassiat, a graduate of the School of Applied Arts in Paris, was advertising a designer at the Office of art editions in Paris from 1935 to 1940.  Becoming an independent painter,  he exhibited for over 40 years in Paris salons.  At the exhibition of French artists, Salon d'Automne and mainly at the international Society of Fine Arts or SIBA (formerly colonial Society) where many prizes were awarded to him.

He also won many awards such as the Maritime Mail, the Senegal and Egypt, the Sahara ( SOPEG 1970), the Petroleum and BP awards, as well as an awards from Rabat Moroccan workshops where he was resident under the patronage of the Moroccan authorities in 1955.

James Rassiat was also the approved painter of the French Navy, with which he participated for over 20 years in numerous expeditions. He received several awards and prices at Navy Shows and received the medal of honor in 1960.

From the artist's son:
Bullfighting was a subject that had always fascinated my father although he was an absolute pacifist and he never attended a bullfight.  What had particularly attracted him was the capture of a strong and authentic action, although violent. The traditional display of bullfighting seen through his artistic expression, becomes a graphic and plastic display of the fight between animal and man, well interpreted through the exact depiction of human and animal anatomy.

Regarding Deauville, my father made very many trips between 1950 and 1975 and there were a large number of friends and admirers. The characteristics of this seaside town, famous and fashionable, held a particular attraction for him.  My father did not hesitate to deploy his easel on the "boards", the Mecca of Deauville, among many tourists and stylish loafers that were curious about his work.  He captured accurately all aspects of beach life of Deauville with its colors, lights and elegance.  The work of James Rassiat when it was classic character, has never featured a single note of academicism.  He's techniques were varied: watercolor, pen, gouache, oil on canvas and paper.
