This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Chairman of the Art Department at Mary Manse College in Toledo, Ohio, Sister Jane Lauer, formerly Catherine Gavin Lauer, specialized in abstract oil and watercolor painting of landscapes, still life, townscapes and religious subjects.  Some of her works were Cubist in style.

She was a member of the Convent of the Toledo Ursuline Order, beginning 1936, and served as a teacher at St. Ursula Academy and, from 1945, at the Mary Manse College until it closed in 1975. She then moved to the Ursuline Center, where she was Artist-in-Residence and had a studio at the Academy Convent on Indian Road. In 1978, she designed the crest for Reverend James R. Hoffman, when he was named Auxiliary Bishop of Toledo.

Previous to entering the Order, she was an art teacher in several Toledo parochial and public schools including Lagrange Elementary School and DeVilbiss High School.

She was a 1925 graduate of St. Ursula Academy and received her early art training at the Toledo Museum of Art School of Design. She also earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in art education in 1934 from Columbia University in New York, and in 1945 earned a Master's Degree in art Education at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago.

Sister Lauer had art entries in numerous exhibitions including the Toledo Museum of Art.  From 1956 to 1957 she studied in Florence, Italy at the Pius XII Graduate School of Art, and during the summer of 1964, studied in Spain at the Universidad Menendez. Both of these study trips abroad were funded by William Gosline Scholarships from the Toledo Museum of Art.

In 1968, she was appointed by Bishop John Donovan to the Toledo Diocesan Liturgical Commission, and served on the Art and Architecture committee for the next sixteen years.
