| Born in South Bend, Indiana, Clara Thorward became a painter, etcher and teacher. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland School of Art, the Art Students League in New York, the Thurn School of Modern Art, and with Hans Hofmann and Henry Keller.
She won numerous prizes and exhibited widely including the Hoosier Salon, and the Salons of America in 1934. Her style ranged from realist to abstraction.
