Biography from Northeast Auctions:
From a New York Times review of an 1989 exhibit of Trajan’s sculpture at the Zabriskie Gallery:

Otherworldly Sculptures Of the Unsung Turku Trajan
By MICHAEL KIMMELMAN?Published: December 22, 1989

To see the 11 sculptures by Turku Trajan that are now at the Zabriskie Gallery is to be entranced and perplexed, for Trajan's legacy remains one of the genuine curiosities of 20th-century American art.

Born in Hungary in 1887, Trajan moved at the age of 21 to New York, where he stayed until his death in 1959, earning a living as a cook and a baker. At what he considered to be his real occupation, namely sculpture and painting, Trajan had no success whatsoever.

His only one-man show came in 1944 and despite the high praise it elicited from prominent artists and art historians like Lyonel Feininger and Meyer Schapiro, Trajan sold not a single work during his lifetime. At his death, 300 sculptures filled his studio on East 17th Street, most of them the painted figures and busts that were his principal interest.
