This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Marjorie Culver Wintermute was born in San Francisco, CA on Jan. 20, 1904. After the earthquake of 1906, the Wintermute family moved across the bay to Berkeley. At 13 Marjorie entered the CSFA where she won scholarships for further study in NYC at the ASL and with Cecilia Beaux. In 1937 she moved to the Monterey Peninsula and became active in the local art scene. After her marriage to operatic singer Carl Schiffeler in 1939, she maintained homes in both Carmel and on the East Coast. Active with the Red Cross, she painted many portraits at Fort Ord and local hospitals. Primarily a portraitist, her work also includes still lifes in oil, watercolor, and pastel. Mrs. Schiffeler was also a fine poetess and made many trips abroad before her demise in San Francisco, CA on March 30, 1978. Exh: Richmond (CA) Academy of Arts, 1932; Carmel AA; GGIE, 1939; PAFA, 1940; CPLH, 1941; Allied Artists of America, 1961.
