This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Baron von Ripper was born in Klausenburg, Austria-Hungary, in 1905. A
European trained artist and a Catholic who found Germany intolerable, Von
Ripper served with the French Foreign Legion and with the Loyalists forces
in Spain. Famously his "The unholy organist, a hymn of hate" - showing
Organist Adolf Hitler playing his hymn of hate in a desecrated cathedral
while victims dangle on a St. Catherine's wheel and the Nazi hierarchy looks
on - appeared on TIME's 1938 Adolf Hitler "man of the year" cover.

He emigrated to the United States and in 1942 entered the American Army becoming a Lt. In 1943 he was awarded the Purple Heart decoration with Oak Leaf Cluster and became a naturalized U.S. citizen. In 1944 he was assigned to the North
African War Art Unit and was cited for bravery under fire. After the war he
received two Guggenheim fellowships. He lived briefly in Connecticut before
moving to Spain in 1945. He is represented in numerous private collections
in the U.S. and Europe including the Museum of Modern Art and the Brooklyn
