This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Larry Johnson was born in 1941 in Lakeview Oregon.  A commercial artist and wildlife painter, he makes his home in Portland Oregon.  Johnson received a degree from the University of Oregon and took part in a two-year special study at the Los Angeles Art Center.

He has brought with him the true feeling and magnetism of the great outdoors.  An avid outdoorsman, when he is not behind his brush you can find him either angling for fresh run of steelhead or wading through a marsh, camera on the ready.  One of his main goals in life is to someday own or manage a wildlife refuge.

The one thing that describes Johnson's paintings is "realism".  Color, anatomy, expression, and background all work together to give the viewer the impression that the subject is soon to walk or fly right out of the painting.  Background and settings in a Johnson painting are captured from selected slides taken by the artist. Color and detail come from on the spot sketches.  The artist prefers to paint his subjects in their live natural habitat, or from mounted specimems.

A finished painting by Larry Johnson, whether it is an oil or watercolor, is the end result of hours of careful research, numerous sketches and color studies, and finally the combination of exacting detail and a labor of love.

Johnson has had numerous one-man shows throughout the country.  He has also exhibited in the following shows: Ducks Unlimited in Chicago, San Francisco, Portland, Maine; Indianapolis, Portland, Oregon; and Kansas City.  Also the Pacific Northwest Western Art Show Spokane,
Washington, the Charles Russell Art Show and Auction in Montana, and the Kansas City, Missouri Wildlife Art Show.

He exhibits in various galleries in Chicago, Seattle, Portland Oregon, New Orleans, St. Paul Minnesota, and Roswell New Mexico. He also has many published works including cover illustrations for numerous national outdoor magazines.
