This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following was submitted as a bulletin by Nancy Geisler:

Russ was my cousin. His birth certificate (not registered until 1918!) says James Russell Hider. He was born April 10, 1899 in Toronto where he lived at 782 Queen Street East, but he later switched his name to Russell James Hider.  He is the nephew of our uncle Arthur Henry Hider, who got him a job at Rolph Clarke Stone as a youth, and hooked him up with his friend AJ Casson, who mentored him.  They sometimes came down to the York Mills Valley area to paint, where a several artist types hung out, and where I grew up.

He studied at the Ontario College of Art under J.W. Beatty and Walter Varley (1918-22) and was exhibiting by the twenties.  But Russ and his family moved to Rochester for a while, and then California for at least three years.  His dad had an engraving business.  Russ did batiks, mostly ship and ocean themed when he was in California.  He met his wife Nadine, a dancer, and when they married around 1931 they moved in with Uncle Art at first in Toronto, then into an apartment near the waterfront.

He did a lot of commercial work, like murals, and windows for Eatons at Christmas, and also magazine covers.  Later in life he moved to cottage country and bought a house in Muskoka and made a living off his paintings, exhibiting from time to time here in Toronto.  After doing a lot of oils still influenced by the group of seven, he switched to egg tempera  He has a couple of pieces in the AGO.

He died in Orillia in 1992, survived by three daughters and a wife and seven grandchildren.
