Matilda McCandless McCrosson was born in Ireland on July 5, 1834. "Tillie" McCandless immigrated to Philadelphia in 1850. Widowed, she joined her son James in San Francisco in 1891 and began working as an artist. Following the earthquake in 1906, she moved across the bay to Berkeley where she remained until her demise on July 29, 1921.
