This biography from the Archives of AskART:

CLAUDE BREEZE RCA (b. 1938)

Claude Breeze (aka. C. Herbert) is an expressionist figurative artist whose subjects focus on social commentary, eroticism, ugliness and violence.  He has also departed from these themes with works such as a series of ink landscape drawings he did in the early 1970’s while he lived in Vancouver, B.C.  His mediums are, oils, acrylics, graphics, ink, pencil and photography.

He was born in Nelson B.C., Canada.  He was educated at the Regina School of Art and the Vancouver School of Art.  His teachers included Art MacKay, Roy Kiyooka, Ronald Bloore and Ernst Lindner. Francis Bacon, Willem de Kooning and German expressionism were influences which show in many of his canvases.  He is presently Professor Emeritus at York University Toronto.

He came to national prominence in 1965 with acceptance to the National Gallery Biennial.  He has since shown at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery and with The Canadian Group of Painters.  His work has also been exhibited on four continents in numerous solo and group shows.  His paintings are in the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, The Montreal Museum of Fine Art and Tate (London).  They are also in many corporate and private collections, as well as in public spaces such as the 300 ft. ceramic tile mural in the Spadina subway station, Toronto.

As an important Canadian artist his work is discussed in most books on Canadian art history and Canadian Modern Art; a few of them are Contemporary Canadian Painting (1972) by William Withrow, published by McClelland and Stewart; Landmarks of Canadian Art (1978), by Peter Mellen, published by McClelland and Stewart; The History of Painting in Canada (1974), by Barry Lord, published by NC Press; and Enjoying Canadian Painting (1976), by Patricia Godsell, published by General Publishing. He is also listed in E. Benezit, published by Gund.

His awards include the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in recognition of his work and his contributions to the visual arts in Canada.

Addendum:

Ted Rettig explains the name C. Herbert, also used by Claude Breeze
"C. Herbert is a name chosen by Claude Breeze to indicate that he has begun a new part of his career as an artist and a new range of intense work.  The surname Herbert has always been part of Breeze's family name. He has recently chosen to use it as his new professional name. This is not meant to mislead or confuse people. It is a statement of a change in his life and in his work."
