Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Omar Carreño was born in Porlamar, Venezuela and studied both in Venezuela, at the Escuela de artes Plásticas y Aplicadas, and in Europe, in Paris, Rome and Venice.

While in Paris, Carreño joined Los Disidentes, a group of Venezuelan artists residing in Paris who rejected the traditional artistic education received in their home country. Thus Carreño became interested in the abstractionist tendencies of the time. In 1951 he began to create transformable and manipulable pieces which he called "polípticos". In May of 1952 he had a solo show at the Galerie Arnaud in Paris in which he exhibited these works.

After his return to Venezuela in the mid-50s, he completed interior and exterior murals in the Facultad de Odontología (Dental school) in the Universidad Central de Venezuela, the only artist to be given an entire building by architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva.

He continues to travel and exhibit both in Paris and in Venezuela and participated in the 1972 Venice Biennial. In 1983, he was honored with a solo show at the Museo Español de arte contemporáneo (Now Museo Reina sofía).

Carreño has written several manifestos on transformable art as well as articles on the relationships between art and science.
