Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Emile Dezaunay was a painter of seascapes and landscapes in his local Brittany. He also frequently painted the port and quaysides of his hometown of Nantes. He was a pupil of Elie Delaunay and Puvis-de-Chavannes and along with Gauguin and Emile Bernard was one of the numerous artists who flocked to Pont Aven, a place of considerable artistic inspiration. He stayed at the famous Inn of Jeanne Gloanec, which was the favourite haunt of many famous artists, and there he met Maxime Maufra and Gustave Loiseau.

He was a founder member of the Salon d'Automne* in Paris and was also invited to exhibit at the Salon des Tuileries.

He adopted a very distinctive technique with swirling brushstrokes and flickering colour, both of which are evident in this painting and give the work such life and movement. His work is represented in a number of French museums including Nantes and St Nazaire.
