José Díaz (1930-1990)

Born in Campo de Criptana, Spain,  in 1930, his family later moved to Carrión de Calatrava.

A self-taught painter, he moved to Madrid in 1952 after his military service, working as a painter and decorator to earn a living.  In 1956 he has his first solo exhibition in Valladolid.

He moved to Paris in 1957 and exhibited at the Biennale International  De Paris in 1961, 1963 and 1965 being a is finalist in 1961 and 1965.  His work was part of the "20 Painters of the École De Paris" and this exhibition traveled across the United States between 1963 and 1964.
For several years he also participated in the "Salon De La Jeune Peinture".  In 1964 he has a solo exhibition in the Dirección General De Bellas Artes in Madrid.  From that date until 1977 when he returned to live in Spain for good, he spent long periods of time in his home country with exhibitions every two years in Madrid and other Spanish cities.  He kept a studio in Madrid from 1966 on. He continued to exhibit in Paris and participated until 1974 in the "Salon Des Realités Nouvelles".

His study of Velázquez themes led to a a series of extremely personal interpretations, while other works of his reflect the search for the mythological interpretation of bullfighting.

In the eighties, landscapes -the constant theme of his work- is portrayed in a series of urban landscapes of big European cities. From 1977 he exhibited in over 25 individual exhibitions.

As of 1990 José Díaz returned to abstract painting.
