From Breton in Rennes where he was born, Emmanuel Fougerat was a
painter of portraits and nude figures and was also an art educator and
museum professional. He studied in Paris with Albert Maignan and
Jean-Paul Laurens. He was Director of the Ecole des Beaux Arts de
Nantes, and founded the museum there, serving as Curator.
In 1912, he was Named a Knight of the French Legion of Honor.
According to the AskART biography of Lillian Freiman, she was a student
of Fougerat at the Ecole des Beaux Arts of Montreal. However,
this may be an error in that she studied in France and may have been
his student at Nantes.
His work is in the Museum of Nantes, the Paris Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Saint Nazaire.
