François Garnier (ca. 1600-1672)

He came from an artist and decorator family working in Fontainebleau.  In Paris he opened a studio, which specialized in the still life genre – inspired by the Flemish and Dutch tradition.  Besides painting, he successfully worked as an art dealer and was in close contact with the artists of the Paris neighborhood of Saint- Germain, which was a well-known artist community at that time.  Through the marriage with the widow Marie Guilbert he became the stepfather and mentor of Louise Moillon, one of the most famous French still-life painters of the 17th Century.

Garnier’s works are characterized by a rejection of all ornamental and purely decorative effects.  He was fascinated by the simple reality and painted mainly compositions with red fruits such as strawberries or cherries.
