A Polish-born painter, known primarily for watercolors but who also did many oil paintings, Gierymski Maksymilian was born in Warsaw Poland and was the older brother of well-known Polish painter, Aleksander Gierymski.  In his painting, he was much influenced by the French Barbizon School.  He spent most of his career in Germany, and died at age 28 in Bavaria.

In 1865, Gierymski studied in Warsaw for several months under Rafal Hadziewicz (1803-86) and Chrystian Breslauer (1805-82), and he was also influenced by the work of Juliusz Kossak, with whom he was acquainted.

His earliest landscape oils date from this period and include forest landscapes as well as military scenes such as Artillery on the Gallop (1867).   He won a state scholarship and studied at the Akademie der Bildenden in Munich from July 1867 until October 1868, and at the same time he worked for the battle painter Franz Adam (1815-86) in his private studio.

He was interested in contemporary German art and, above all, in 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painting and contemporary French painting.  He played an active role in the community of Polish artists studying in Munich who were influenced in particular by the work of the French Barbizon school.

Gierymski soon won the recognition of Munich critics and picture-dealers, and in 1868 he was elected a member of the Kunstverein.  From 1868 Gierymski exhibited in Poland, and although living in Munich, sent paintings to exhibitions in Poland, especially to Warsaw.

He returned to Poland on several occasions, and drawn to the country landscape south of Warsaw painted Dawn Landscape in 1869 as well as other landscape paintings.  He also produced genre scenes at this time, such as Praying on the Sabbath, 1871, which depicted a poverty stricken area of Warsaw.

Maksymilain Gierymski died in 1874 in Bad Reichenvall, Bavaria.
