A Dutch landscape painter who settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1854, he was the first teacher of Frederick Stuart Church and Lawrence Earle. He remained in Grand Rapids until his death in 1861.

Biography from The Artisfun Gallery:
Marinus Harting was born in 1816 in Delft, Holland.  His family later moved to Arnheim, near Rotterdam.  He moved to America in 1848 because his sweetheart, the daughter of Arnheim's burgomeister, had emigrated there.  On May 1, 1851, at the Dutch Reformed Church in Greenwich Village, New York City, Marinus and Hendrikje Liesveld were married.  He and his wife traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1854.  An accomplished Dutch artist he decided to permanently settle in Grand Rapids to teach art.

He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the American Art Union, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the Maryland Historical Society.

Marinus Harting died in 1861 in Grand Rapids.
