Roman Havelka
(1877-1950)

Roman Havelka was born  April 30, 1877 in the town of Jemnice, (Czech Republic).  When he was eight, his family moved to the multi-ethnic town of Jihlava, where young Roman received a German education and compliments from his teachers on his artistic abilities.

After his high school years at the Academy of Applied Arts (Prague) he moved on to the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague where he studied with Julie Marak (1832-1899), the noted impressionist Antonin Slavicek (1870-1910) and Rudolf von Ottenfeld.  After graduation he furthered his training in Dresden and Munich and received a travel-scholarship to Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina.  His work was ultimately exhibited in major European cities including in Vienna, London and Berlin.

In addition to his highly successful career as a painter, he devoted himself to the causes of artists at large.  In 1923 he became the chairman of the Association of Moravian Artists and after serving the term, he was named Honorary Chairman for Life.

He was also an excellent illustrator and a member of the Society of Illustrators.  His best known illustration work appeared in the book "Czech Castles" by August Sedlácek.

Roman Havelka died from pneumonia on June 20th, 1950, during his last visit to Podyji.  His work as an artist was both prolific and widely exhibited, totalling well over three thousand images.  His contribution to the promoting of artistic endeavor is signified by streets named after him in Jihlava and  Znojmo.
