Biography from Auctionata:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Ferdinand Knab was born in Würzburg and was initially trained in architecture.  In 1859 he moved to Munich, where he attended the painting classes of Arthur von Ramberg (1819-1875) and Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1886).  Later in 1868 he traveled to Italy, where he discovered his passion for romantic Ruin landscapes.

Ferdinand Knab was a very sought after artist during his life time and was occasionally commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria for the Munich Residenz and the Linderhof Palace. (cbo)
