Marc-Antoine Bissiere, Louttre Bissiere (b.1926)

He was born in Paris in 1926, son of well known artist Roger Bissiere (1888-1964), who nicknamed him "loutre" (Otter).  The younger artist adopted the name to distinguish himself from his father and establish his own identity.

He started painting in 1942.  Early in 1944, under the name of Antoine Bissière, he exhibited his first works at the Galerie de France with his father and friends (Bertholle, Jean Le Moal, Manessier, Gustave Singier, Etienne Martin).  From early 1945 on,  Loutre spent two years working with his father: « they were 2 years of sharing.  I was offering him my spontaneity, he was offering me his experience ».

The artist left Boissiérettes in 1949 and settled in Paris where while still painting, he earned his living as a house painter until 1955.  In 1954, he married Laure Latapie, painter Louis Latapie’s daughter.

Pierre Loeb’s art gallery exhibited his paintings in 1957, Jeanne Bucher’s art gallery in 1959.  At the same time, Marc-Antoine Bissière showed his works at the Salon de Mai, then at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles.

Louttre Bissiere developed a unique print-making technique of combining woodblock and copperplates to achieve a three dimensional sculptural effect.  He preferred a more figurative abstract style than his father, calling it "figuration allusive".  He also created sculpture, stained glass windows, and tapestries.
