Biography from Auctionata:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

August Lüdecke-Cleve initially studied at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf under Hugo Crola and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Franz Roubaud and Heinrich von Zügel.  He graduated from his master class with a silver medal.

From 1901 onwards, he had his studio in Munich and repeatedly traveled to the Lower Rhine, the Chiemsee and the Salzkammergut.  Lüdecke-Cleve was a member of the artist group Laetitia in Dusseldorf, Munich Artists' Association and the Munich Artists' Society Allotria.

He first showed his works in Dusseldorf and from 1908 onwards he regularly exhibited in the Glaspalast in Munich. In 1943 his studio in Munich was destroyed.  He then settled in the Allgäu.

The painter created mostly landscapes and animal paintings. His late work is defined by representations of cows.  The influence of his teacher von Zügel can be seen in his subject matter, use of color, lighting effects as well as the broad brushwork.
