| Milton Monroe was born on July 27, 1898 in Monrovia, CA, the city his grandfather, James Monroe, founded in 1886. After serving in WWI, Monroe studied art at UCLA. Upon graduation, he taught briefly at a high school in Huntington Park and at the Chouinard Art School (1928). After one year in Seattle as head of the art department of the Post-Intelligencer, he settled in San Francisco in 1930 as art director for the Chronicle, a position he held until retiring in 1968. Monroe died in San Leandro, CA on Dec. 17, 1986.
