Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Jacques Pons was born in Avignon in 1936, and spent his childhood in Ardeche.  He studied for four years at the academy Allard of Marseilles.  He received special recognition for poster work with Chinese ink.  He returned in 1958 to Ardèche where he painted and exhibited in local galleries.   The next year he started working in a public works project and remained for eight years.

From 1966 to 1968, he was in Corsica where he took great interest in landscape painting, using rich color and tones that some of his viewers have described as violent.  After this, he joined his childhood friend, the painter Jean-Paul Cleren, in Saint-Tropez where they created workshop frames.  This new job allows him to get acquainted with famous painters such as Bernard Buffet, Antoni Clavé, Leonor Fini, Pierre-Yves Trémois and writers: Francoise Sagan, Andre Roussin and Dominique Lapierre.

In 1971, Pons' wife opened an art gallery where she exhibited work by international and local artists, and this venue became a major boost for the sales of work by Jacques and also stirred encouragement from collectors.  He became especially noted for light filled paintings and for a fauve-like style. Until 1985, he combined his painting with craft activities, but then moved to Avignon to devote himself solely to painting.
