Biography from Overland Gallery of Fine Art:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Igor Popov is one of those painters whose moral, social and creative outlooks were drawn from the profoundly philosophical attitude toward the realities of the contemporary world.  His talent was determined by his intention to express ingenuous thoughts and daring emotions in chamber motifs and outwardly simple subjects.

Popov was born in Kharkov in 1927.  A 1951 graduate of the Surikov State Art Institute in Moscow where he studied under Gerasimov and Pochitalov, Popov began exhibiting in 1954 in Republican and All-Union exhibitions.  By the late 1960s, his work was included in exhibitions of Soviet art in India, Czechoslovakia, Japan, Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, West Berlin, Italy and Hungary. In France, Italy, Japan and Poland his paintings were offered for both exhibit and sale.

He matured as an artist while traveling through northern lands.  The painter's knowledge of folk customs and the northern culture, where age-old traditions had merged with modern life, focused his attention on the problem of passing a strong spiritual heritage from one generation to another.  Popov's entire body of work is dominated by a single theme: that a true understanding of one's country exists only if one knows his nation's history and if he is deeply aware of such concepts as "parental home" and "native land."

By the end of the1960s Moscow as a theme had become the painter's major artistic quest. But rather than painting the teeming city he sought the quiet places of Moscow, contemplative environments that fostered meditation.  More and more he painted his studio with its ascetic furnishings as a representation of his own spiritual world.  In 1970 he was awarded the prestigious Silver Medal from the USSR Academy of Arts for the series of portraits, Fishermen of Galich, Galich. Fishing Season Starts - Galich is a town in Northern Russia.

Igor Popov went to Galich to do sketches together with Vladimir Stozharov. Our Yard - This is the yard of the apartment house reserved for artists in Bryanskaia Street in Moscow.

Igor Popov died in 1999 in Moscow.
