Born on February 10, 1855 in Borken (Westphalia) - died about 1944

A German portrait and genre painter, Julia Schily-Koppers showed early talent.  She graduated at the Münsteraner Kirchenmaler Dominik Moser and then studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under the professors Benjamin Vautier, Eduart Gebhardt and Wilhelm Sohn.

In 1892 she married the engineer Leo Schily, and they had three children: Francis, Cornelia and Fritz. In 1920, after the death of her husband, she began to paint again.

In her early years she used the conventional American style of painting. Prominent clients acquired her images such as Kaiser Wilhelm who purchased Opportunity Makes the Thief. Unfortunately, it has for many years been lost.

Between 1878 and 1891, exhibitions of her work were held in Berlin, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Liverpool. In the Borkener City Museum pictures of hers are in the collection including portrait, homeland, religion and tradition.
