Biography from Tobin Reese Fine Art:
Srihadi Soedarsono was born in Surakarta, Indonesia, in 1931. From 1946-1948, he was involved in creating posters for the Indonesian resistance movement opposing the Dutch occupation of Yogyakarta, and in 1948, he illustrated the Kaliurang peace negotiations that would signify Indonesian independence. Some of these early works were exhibited at the Mon Décor Museum in Yogyakarta in 2012.

Soedarsono would go on to graduate from the University of Indonesia at Bandung in 1958, and afterwards would earn a Masters Degree in Art from Ohio State University. Later on, Soedarsono would utilize this education and teach at Jakarta Art Institute.

In the early 1960s Soedarsono began a series of paintings called Cosmic Horizons. These paintings would help to bring him to the forefront of the Indonesian art movement. During the 1960s Soedarsono continued his studies in the United States and created political and social art which mirrored the tumultuous era. During this time he also painted works such as Borobudur, depicting images of traditional Javanese and Balinese dancers.

Among his accomplishments include an Arts Award from the Republic of Indonesia in 1971, a Cultural Award from the Government of Australia in 1973, and a Fulbright Grant from the United States Government in 1980.
