Clara Arnheim (1865 – 1942)

A German artist best known for her pastoral landscapes, portraits, and farm scenes.  She is considered a founder of the Federal Hiddenseer school of artists which was formed in Germany around 1922.  Arnheim (Arnhem) spent many of her summers painting in Schwartz, Germany.

She also experimented with printmaking including techniques such as etching.  She is regarded for her paintings in oil and watercolor.  Many of her subjects captured the islands, fishermen, landscapes, and inhabitants around Hiddensee, Germany.  She used pastel colors and loose, soft brushstrokes.  Her paintings can be characterized as part of the Impressionist style that was widely popular throughout Europe during that period.

Clara Arnheim came from a rich German-Jewish family.  She was a member of the  Künstlerinnenverein Berlin and cofounder of Künstlerinnenbund Hiddensee, more famous as "Blaue Scheune" Hiddensee.  She created a lot of watercolor and oil paintings and gouache until she got banned by the nazi regime.  She lived in Berlin, Uhlandstrasse 181 together with a friend and had to lease part of her large apartment to make a living.  In 1942 she was brought to the concentration camp Theresienstadt and died there shortly afterward on August 28, 1942.
