Prof. Jakob Anton Bucher (1927-)

Born in Hopfgarten, Brixental, Austria, after basic schooling, he entered an apprenticeship with Toni Kirchmayer in Innsbruck as a church painter and decorator.

In 1947, Bucher and his friend Ludwig Neuhauser went to Vienna to study with Sergius Pauser and Herbert Böckl at the "Akademie der bildenden Künste".  Those were lean times, as he financed his studies with a number of odd-jobs, even working as a house painter in Switzerland during vacation months. In 1952, Bucher graduated, receiving his diploma as well as the master-class price.

From 1952 on, he worked as an independent artist in Vienna, also painting Old Master copies to make a living.  Since the beginning of the 1970s, he has been a member of the "Wiener Künstlerhaus" and served for two years as the organization's vice president.

The interpretation of the human condition, most notably that of a human being in perilous or threatened circumstances, represents a main focus in his oeuvre.  The collage medium, as well as his selection of subjects and their interpretation contribute to the dramatic effect of these paintings.

Throughout his life, Bucher dedicated himself to putting on canvas his interpretations of landscapes he saw on his many travels, emphasizing the essence of a scene rather than the realistic detail of it.

He traveled in Europe, as well as Asia, Africa and the United States of America.

His paintings have been exhibited in galleries across Europe and are in public collections in Austria and private collections in Europe and abroad.
